1. Why the part alone does not deliver what it promises

The factory ECU knows one precise engine: one exhaust back-pressure, one filter permeability, one mixture target for each operating mode. Change the system or the filter and those values become wrong. The engine corrects a little, within a narrow window, then falls back on its tables.

Anyone who has lived it knows the result: plenty of noise, a machine that barely pulls harder, a flat spot when the throttle reopens and sometimes a rise in temperature that was not there before. The part is not to blame; the calibration simply did not follow.

PNP TUNE works inside the factory tables with VCM Editor : fuel, lambda targets per mode, spark, torque request, transitions. The full reasoning is in our article on HP Tuners.

2. The exhausts our customers fit

On Harley-Davidson et Indian Motorcycle, we regularly recalibrate machines fitted with Vance & Hines, S&S Cycle, Bassani, Screamin’ Eagle, Rinehart Racing, Freedom Performance, Khrome Werks, Cobra, Trask Performance, Two Brothers Racing, Arlen Ness, Zard et Dr. Jekill & Mr Hyde.

On the quad and side-by-side side, Polaris et Can-Am mostly see systems from HMF, Two Brothers Racing et Akrapovič ; the same logic applies on CFMOTO et Segway Powersports.

Two-into-one, slip-on, full system: each configuration moves the filling to a different place in the rev range. That is why we ask what is fitted to the machine before preparing the tune.

3. Filters and intake kits

K&N, S&B et Twin Air come up most often, together with the intake kits from Screamin’ Eagle, S&S Cycle et Arlen Ness on big twins. A more permeable filter does not simply let more air through at full load: it also changes filling at part load, where the motorcycle spends most of its time.

A filter sold as “stage 1” means exactly that: a level of preparation that expects a matching tune. Without it, the part works against the ECU.

4. In which order to go about it

  • Fit the parts first : exhaust, filter, intake kit. Ride a few kilometres to check mountings and sealing.
  • Order the solution matching your brand, year and model: the RTD4 interface and the HP Tuners credit pool are included in the packs.
  • Read the ECU at home, on the diagnostic socket.
  • We calibrate on the actual configuration: Street Remote for our proven setting, Custom Remote if you want a calibration built on your own datalogs — the right choice when the system is full and the filter open.
  • You flash, and the return to the original configuration stays free at any time.

If your machine also carries a speed limiter, it goes in the same tune: the values we encounter are detailed on the page speed limiter removal.

Frequently asked questions

I fitted an exhaust and a filter: do I really need a tune?

Yes, and it is written on the box: a “stage 1” filter or exhaust names a level of preparation that assumes a matching tune. Without it the engine still applies the values computed for the original system, with a lean mixture where fuel is needed and a hollow response when the throttle reopens.

The seller told me the ECU adapts by itself.

It corrects, within a narrow window, around the values it expects. It rewrites neither the lambda target of the mode concerned, nor the torque request table, nor the transitions. That is exactly what we adjust inside the factory tables with VCM Editor.

Which comes first, the part or the tune?

The part first. Fit the exhaust and the filter, ride a few kilometres to check sealing and mountings, then read the ECU: we calibrate on the machine's actual configuration.

Which exhaust brands do you know?

The ones our customers fit: Vance & Hines, S&S Cycle, Bassani, Screamin’ Eagle, Rinehart Racing, Freedom Performance, Khrome Werks, Cobra, Trask Performance, Two Brothers Racing, Arlen Ness, Zard and Dr. Jekill & Mr Hyde on motorcycles; HMF, Akrapovič and Two Brothers Racing on quads and side-by-sides.

What about air filters?

K&N, S&B and Twin Air come up most often, together with the Screamin’ Eagle, S&S Cycle and Arlen Ness intake kits on big twins. A more permeable filter changes filling at part load as well as at full load: the tune has to follow.

How long between the order and the road?

One evening of handling on your side. You read the ECU with the RTD4, we prepare the calibration, it comes back through TDN and you flash it. No ECU shipping, no workshop visit.
